It is an incredibly unique fabric, with a beautiful matt, irregular texture, and a light, breathable, airy feel. It also drapes and flows very well. More than 3000 artisans and craft people are supported by the manufacture of this material, providing work, primarily to women, living in remote villages. As well as it’s social benefits, the black and white striped fabric also has huge environmental benefits: it is 100% natural meaning that it is completely biodegradable, and is also close to carbon neutral as possible, as most of the spinning and weaving is done by hand.
The formation of the black and white stripes on the material is known as a melange. A melange is when fibres of different colours are spun together creating a yarn with irregular blocks of colour. When these yarns are woven together, they create a beautiful irregular striped pattern. This fabric is woven by hand – yes, you read that right – using a hand loom. Due to the authentic, hand woven nature of the fabric there may be a few irregularities in the weave.
